📖 What is the difference between data and information?
When you organise data so that it has some meaning, it becomes information.
The data is just the bare facts, without any meaning.

Using spreadsheets, you can organise data to make it easier to read and understand and turn it into information, as well as do lots more, which you’ll do in a future lesson.
📖 Where can we get data from?
| Primary Source | Secondary Source |
|---|---|
| You collected the data yourself | Somebody else collected the data |
Note that “you” refers to the person presenting the data. For example, if a newspaper shows you data from a survey that they themselves carried out (primary) vs from a survey that was done by other researchers (secondary).
📝 Level 1/2 – Let’s collect some data
You are now going to create a survey to collect some primary data using Microsoft Forms.
Requirements
- Do not ask for, or enter, any personal details (e.g. name, address, date of birth, etc.).
- Where possible, do not mark questions as “required”.
Ideas & suggestions
- Something proportional (such as how many people for a category, or a breakdown of something into parts)
- E.g. preferences for a party, everyone’s favourite colour, what sport/activities you like doing, breakdown of how many hours you spend doing various activities on a given evening, etc.
- One or more numerical things for which you can calculate: the sum total for the group; the average in the group; the max and min values
- E.g. number of hours spent doing something per day/week/evening like playing sport or doing homework.
Click the button below to go Micosoft Forms and follow your teacher’s instructions to create a form and then share it with the rest of the class for them to fill it out.
📝 Level 3 – Word Matching
Download the worksheet below and follow the instructions to match up some of the keywords from today’s lesson.
In this lesson, you…
- Discovered the difference between data and information
- Determined whether sources of data were primary or secondary
- Collected some data
Next lesson, you will…
- Analyse data
- Create charts
- Use functions
🏅 Level up
🥇 Level 1
- Create a survey using Microsoft Forms to collect some primary data on the topic of your choice, paste a link to your Form into the Teams assignment. For Level 1 this will be a basic survey with only a few questions.
🥈 Level 2
- Create a survey using Microsoft Forms to collect some primary data on the topic of your choice, paste a link to your Form into the Teams assignment. For Level 2 this will be a complex survey with many questions that are detailed and useful.
🥉 Level 3
- Complete the Level 3 – Word Matching worksheet and upload it to Teams.
